Rooted in Symbolism
The idea that certain gems carry spiritual, healing, or energetic properties is not a new one. In fact, this dates back all the way to ancient civilizations. Egyptian pharaohs were often buried with gems that were thought to help them in the afterlife. For example, peridot was known as “the gem of the sun” and was placed in the tombs in order to chase away evil spirits. Lapis brought protection, renewal, and even resurrection. In ancient China, jade symbolized high moral virtue, wisdom, justice, and benevolence and was even thought to possess supernatural protective powers. This might seem a little hard to believe but in a lot of cultures, not much has changed. Gems are still widely sought after due to the deep symbolism they carry.
The Meaning Behind Labradorite
Labradorite is considered the “stone of transformation.” It was first documented being discovered in 1770 in Labrador, Canada. Local lore states that the Inuit people were convinced that the Northern Lights became trapped in the stones. In order to release the frozen fires within, warriors struck the stones with spears and released most of the lights. However, they believed some remained within the stones, giving the iridescent blue, green, and yellow flashes it is known for. In actuality, those flashes come from light hitting the crystalline structures in the stone, resulting in the refracting and scattering of the light, which is called labradorescence (also pretty magical).
Labradorite might not hold the Northern Lights, but that hasn’t stopped people from believing in its magic. Labradorite is considered a “high energy stone,” said to enhance spiritual gifts like intuition and psychic abilities, along with encouraging inner strength. People enjoy wearing labradorite jewelry, not only because of its “labradorescence,” but also because doing so might bring serenity and self-awareness.
Whether you’re choosing to purchase labradorite because of its energetic properties or because you’re as obsessed with those gorgeous flashes as we are, we don’t think you can go wrong.
